3 Things to Do in Lake Como, Italy

Owner and president of Pacific West Vascular Solutions in San Francisco, California, Jennifer Walling is an avid traveler, enjoying both nearby skiing in Aspen and faraway travels to Europe. Having fallen in love with Italy, Jennifer Walling enjoys the calming beauty and tranquility of Lake Como, located in the north of the country. Here are four experiences that should not be missed on a journey to this glamorous destination:

1. Varenna: Boasting an incredibly well-preserved medieval city center and lined with pastel colored houses, this harbor town is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of local wine. It is also the home of Villa Monastero, previously a convent, which now allows visitors to wander it's extensive gardens.

2. Sentiero del Viandante: Perfect for those who want to hike and enjoy the great outdoors, this nearly 30-mile trail offers breathtaking views along the eastern side of Lake Como. An ancient trail originally taking travelers from the Milan area all the way to Switzerland, it leads adventurers through small towns and villages, perfect for taking breaks in local inns.

3. The Basilica of Sant’Abbondio: With an astonishing history dating back to the 5th century, this church is easily the oldest in the area. What it lacks in decor, it makes up for in the many building styles that can be found within, as it was constructed over a period of centuries.
